Word of Mouth: Farryn Weiner

Lake Tahoe has always felt like a breath of fresh air to me. There’s something about its crisp mountain mornings and shimmering blue waters that makes the outside world fade away. My recent visit, a perfect blend of adventure and indulgence, reminded me why this place holds a permanent spot on my list of escapes worth talking about. The adventure began the moment I stepped into Exclusive Resorts' 4-bedroom alpine residence, perched high above the lake. The space was equal parts cozy and luxurious, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing views of snow-capped peaks. It felt like stepping into a postcard, except this postcard came with an on-site team who turned every desire into reality.

The next morning, I started my day with a sound bath meditation led by Lifeforce, whose in-residence yoga and wellness experiences are nothing short of transformative. The gentle tones of crystal bowls washed over me, syncing perfectly with the serene mountain vibes. If you ever want to feel truly connected to the earth beneath you, this is the way to do it.

But Lake Tahoe isn’t just about serenity; it’s also about embracing the unexpected. Case in point: my hike with High Sierra Pack Goats. Yes, goats. These gentle creatures trotted along beside me, carrying gear as we explored rugged trails with views that made every uphill step worth it. At one point, one of the goats gave me a sideways glance, almost as if to say, “Can you believe this view?” And honestly, I couldn’t. It was nature’s humor and beauty wrapped into one unforgettable experience.

Another highlight? Paddleboarding on the lake. There’s something meditative about gliding across water so clear you can see the sun’s rays dance on the sandy bottom. It’s quiet out there, just you, the paddle, and the lake stretching endlessly ahead. It’s the kind of peace you can’t buy but can always come back to in your mind.

And then, of course, there was the lakeside picnic — a picture-perfect setup curated by one of Tahoe’s top luxury picnic planners — Tahoe Elevated Picnics. Imagine plush blankets, artisanal charcuterie, and chilled rosé, all set against the backdrop of Tahoe’s sparkling waters. It’s one thing to enjoy a meal; it’s another to make it a memory.

Dinner that evening took me to Trokay, a culinary gem nestled in Truckee. The tasting menu was an artful journey through the flavors of the region, each dish more inventive and delicious than the last. The chef’s passion for local ingredients was palpable, and the presentation was as stunning as the taste.

Before heading home, I had to do some quick shopping. First at at Bespoke, a boutique that feels like Tahoe distilled into a store. From handcrafted jewelry to curated home goods, every piece felt like a story waiting to be told. The second, Sierra Shirts & Shades, housed in an actual log cabin, the shop is crammed with every manner of souvenirs — including vintage Tahoe ski posters and carved wooden bear statues. I left with a few treasures to keep the magic of the weekend alive a little longer.

Tahoe tips from the travel expert

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about Lake Tahoe, it’s that it’s not just a destination; it’s a feeling. It’s in the moments of awe on a paddleboard, the laughter shared over a perfect meal, and the quiet connections made on a mountain trail. Tahoe isn’t just a place you visit; it’s a place that stays with you. And for me, that’s the kind of story worth telling.
