Travel Diary: Captivated by Japan
In September, Members discovered Japan’s blend of ancient traditions and modern luxury with exclusive access to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hakone.
Day 1 | Tokyo
Konnichiwa from Japan! Our 2024 Japan: Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hakone Once-in-a-Lifetime Journey is in full swing. The journey began with a warm welcome at the Peninsula Tokyo’s Private Aviation Lounge, where Members mingled over cocktails, taking in the breathtaking Tokyo skyline. For those eager to explore, the guide led them to a local spot frequented by Tokyo residents on the weekends. It was the perfect way to dive into the culture and kick off the adventure.
Day 2 | Tokyo
The next morning, Members jumped into the heart of Japanese culture at Taiko Lab, where they channeled their inner drummers during an exhilarating hands-on Taiko lesson. Laughter, rhythm, and energy filled the room before a jaw-dropping professional performance left everyone in awe. The day rolled on with a visit to the Tsukiji Fish Market, where a two-Michelin-starred sushi master led a lively sushi-making session. The Lowe Family from Orange County claimed the title of "The Club's Best Sushi Chef," adding a competitive edge to the fun. That night, Members were treated to an unforgettable 8-course feast at a Robatayaki restaurant, where every bite was a show-stopper.
Day 3 | Tokyo
At Tokyo’s oldest temple, Sensoji, Members enjoyed a private blessing ceremony led by the temple priests, a rare and intimate experience away from the usual crowds. After a scenic rickshaw ride around the temple, the group split off — some opted for downtime at the Peninsula, while others explored Tokyo’s historic Yanesen district. A visit to the tranquil Nezu Shrine capped off the afternoon. Dinner was a divine tempura meal back at the Peninsula, setting a high bar for the days ahead.
Day 4 | Kyoto
The excitement ramped up as Members boarded a first-class bullet train to Kyoto, a city bursting with cultural riches. Upon arriving, they dove into the historic Gion District, famous for its mysterious geisha, before checking into the serene Four Seasons Kyoto, set around a 12th-century garden. The day culminated with a Kobe beef dinner at Mikaku, a true culinary masterpiece. Kobe beef, a premium type of wagyu, must come from the Kobe city region of Japan to earn its prestigious name. It’s only served at a very limited number of places outside of Kobe, and we were fortunate to dine at one of them. Members couldn’t stop raving about the meal, declaring it the best beef they’d ever tasted.
Day 5 | Kyoto
An early start took Members to the iconic Fushimi Inari Shrine, where they arrived before the crowds and had the magical Torii gates almost entirely to themselves. After a hearty breakfast back at the Four Seasons, the group explored Nijo Castle, followed by a mouthwatering ramen lunch. That afternoon, Members got creative at the Roketsu cloth-dyeing studio, where they crafted their own traditional Japanese art with guidance from three generations of artisans. The results were as beautiful as they were unique.
Day 6 | Kyoto
Next on the agenda was Arashiyama, where Members visited the picturesque Tenryu-ji Temple before gliding through the bamboo forest in traditional rickshaws. After a relaxing afternoon, Members suited up in kimonos for a private meditation and tea ceremony at Gesshin-In, an experience that felt like stepping back in time. Dinner at Sodoh was made even more magical by a performance from three geisha, who entertained with songs, games, and glimpses into their secretive world. It was a cultural immersion like no other — an extraordinarily rare experience, offering a glimpse into a tradition few ever witness in everyday life in Japan.
Day 7 | Hakone
Hakone was the next stop, where Members soaked in the region’s natural beauty and artistic flair. They explored the Hakone Open Air Museum, home to impressive sculptures and a fascinating Picasso collection, before checking in at the Gora Kadon Ryokan. There, they slipped into traditional yukatas and indulged in the art of relaxation, capping off the evening with an exquisite private kaiseki dinner, where every course was a testament to the beauty of Japanese cuisine.
Day 8 | Hakone
The day began with a scenic ride on the Hakone Ropeway, taking Members to the volcanic Owakudani, where they sampled the famous black eggs, believed to add seven years to one’s life. A tranquil boat ride on Lake Ashi and a visit to a local artisan’s trick box workshop completed a day rich with history, craftsmanship, and unforgettable landscapes.
Day 9 | Kamakura
On the return to Tokyo, the group took a detour to Kamakura, where they explored two of the area’s most iconic landmarks: the Great Buddha at Daibutsu and the poignant Hasadera Temple, known for its thousands of Jizo statues honoring children lost. The experience was both beautiful and heart-wrenching, leaving a lasting impression on the group.
Day 10 | Tokyo
For their final day, Members had the freedom to tailor their own adventures in Tokyo, with private guides and drivers on hand. Some chose to shop for traditional pottery, knives, and matcha, while others explored Tokyo’s vibrant museums and historic districts. That evening, everyone gathered for one last meal at Happo-en, a stunning venue with Edo-period gardens. The night ended with drinks at Peter bar, where Members toasted to the incredible journey they’d shared, trading stories and making plans to reunite in the future.
Day 11 | Departure
As the trip came to a close, Members departed Tokyo with hearts full of memories and new friends made along the way. Their Once-in-a-Lifetime Journey through Japan’s rich culture and natural beauty would be one they’d never forget.
